Long-tongued bat (Glossophaginae)

Project type

photography

Date

January 2025

These images capture a fascinating moment in night photography: bats in flight, approaching a banana blossom to drink nectar. Such scenes are barely perceptible to the naked eye, as the animals move quickly and usually in complete darkness.

The photo was taken using indirect flash, triggered by a camera's built-in flash. While the bats themselves were almost invisible, their movement could only be guessed at. With a keen eye for the right moment, the flash was released – freezing the brief instant of flight. This reveals a scene that normally takes place hidden in the night and remains unseen by the human eye.
