European ground squirrel
Project type

Date
May 2025
These small, inquisitive rodents live in some of the green spaces and meadows around Vienna. They often peek out of their burrows and attentively observe their surroundings. They offer wonderful subjects for photographers: with a little patience, you can observe ground squirrels feeding, standing upright, or scampering around. They are particularly active in the early morning or late afternoon, and the soft light makes for beautiful pictures. It's important to keep your distance and not disturb the animals so they behave naturally. This results in authentic and vibrant nature photographs. A telephoto lens, of course, helps you get closer to your subject. For photographing ground squirrels, I've found the RF 70-200mm and the RF 100-500mm lenses to be very effective.
